Shafaqna India: A 10-month-old child in Assam has been diagnosed with human metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the first case of the season, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The child, admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh with cold-related symptoms four days ago, is now stable. “The infection was confirmed after routine testing at the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre in Lahowal,” AMCH Superintendent Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan said.
Bhuyan emphasized that HMPV is a common virus and poses no significant threat. Senior Scientist Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty noted that since 2014, 110 cases of HMPV have been detected in Dibrugarh, with such cases typically appearing each year during winter and early spring.
Human metapneumovirus is a mild respiratory infection, usually self-limiting, with most patients recovering without complications.
