In back-to-back carjacking incidents, three miscreants forcibly took away another Maruti car at gunpoint from the road separating Sector 79 and 80 here tonight.
The incident occurred around 9.30 pm on the pitch dark road when the victim, Mohit Verma (31), stopped his Swift Dzire car to fetch eggs from a street vendor while on his way home, located in Sector 105 here.
Mohit, who runs a business of packed juices in Chandigarh, said the three carjackers came from an open area alongside the road on foot. “I was sitting on the driver’s seat and was about to start my car when one of them brandished a pistol and asked me to come out of the vehicle,” said the victim, adding that the miscreants thrashed him before taking away his car at gunpoint.
Besides Mohit, two vendors were also present at the spot, but none of them reacted. One of the vendors said the miscreants arrived there only at that time as before that he did not notice anybody there.
After forcibly taking away the car, the miscreants took a U-turn and fled towards Airport Road.
Mohit called up his cousin Abhishek, who then informed the Police Control Room about the incident.
Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal, along with DSP Ramandeep Singh and Inspector Tarlochan Singh, reached the spot. SSP Chahal said a message about the crime had been flashed all around. “Certainly, we are concerned about the back-to-back incidents of carjacking in the area. I assure that the carjackers will be nabbed soon,” said the SSP. Asked whether today’s incident could be handiwork of the same gang which had forcibly taken away a Maruti Swift car from the Baddi-Mullanpur road yesterday, the SSP said the possibility of the involvement of the same persons could not be ruled out. The police said carjackers were targeting mainly Maruti cars and they would look into this angle during the investigation.
