Shafaqna India: The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is on course for a decisive victory in the Assam Assembly elections, poised to form a third consecutive government.
As per the latest Election Commission trends, the NDA is leading in 82 seats, while the Indian National Congress is ahead in 19 and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in just one.
The BJP recorded several key wins, including in Dhemaji and Sissibargaon constituencies. Notable victors include Amiya Kanti Das (Dholai), Kishor Nath (Borkhola), Ajanta Neog (Golaghat), Mridul Kumar Dutta (Dergaon), Bhubon Pegu (Jonai), and Diplu Ranjan Sharma (New Guwahati). Senior minister Pijush Hazarika successfully retained the Jagiroad seat by defeating his rival Bubul Das.
In a major upset, Congress’s chief ministerial candidate and three-time MP Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat Assembly seat to BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami. Meanwhile, Mazibur Rahman of AIUDF emerged victorious in Dalgaon.
Joyous celebrations erupted at the BJP headquarters, Vajpayee Bhawan, with party workers waving flags, beating drums, dancing, and distributing sweets.
Assam witnessed a high voter turnout of 85.38%, surpassing the 2016 figure when the BJP first came to power after 15 years of Congress rule. In the 2021 elections, the BJP-led alliance had secured 75 seats compared to 50 by Congress and its allies. The strong mandate reflects continued public support for the NDA in the state.
