While in a lockdown, citizens have been advised to continue actively exercising social distancing.

In a meeting with chief ministers on 11 May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who extended the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown to 17 May, said the focus should now be on reducing the transmission rate of the SARS-CoV-2 virus while gradually increasing public activity.

He also reaffirmed the importance of ‘do gaz doori‘ (a distance of two yards) and added said the suggestion of a night curfew, raised by many chief ministers, will reaffirm the feeling of caution among people.

The more than 700 districts in the country are currently classified into Red, White and Green zones depending on the prevalence of infections. After the first extension of the lockdown, restrictions were partially eased and several industries allowed to resume work. The central government ministries also reopened, with all senior officials returning to offices.
