Curfew partially eased in Manipur as security forces assess the situation

Shafaqna India: After two days of calm following a surge in violence in Manipur since September 1, which resulted in nine deaths and 15 injuries, curfew was conditionally eased in parts of the state on Thursday, and internet services were partially restored in certain areas.

Approximately 80 companies of the BSF and CRPF remain deployed in Manipur to handle any potential flare-ups, as officials indicated the situation appears to be stabilizing. However, top security officials have held multiple meetings to monitor the situation, which remains tense despite no new reports of violence in the past three to four days.

The state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and Chief Secretary met with senior officials from the BSF, CRPF, and Manipur Police to assess the situation further, according to sources.

Sources also mentioned that, even after over a year of violence, distrust between the Meitei and Kuki communities has increased, with no resolution in sight. On Thursday, the Manipur government conditionally restored internet broadband services, but the ban on mobile internet continues.

Internet services in the five Imphal valley districts—Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, and Bishnupur—were suspended on Tuesday following violent student protests.
