Shafaqna India: The government is set to introduce three bills, including two constitutional amendments, aimed at implementing its ‘one nation, one election’ initiative.
One of the constitutional amendment bills will focus on synchronizing local body elections with those of the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, requiring approval from at least 50 percent of the states.
In line with its commitment to the ‘one nation, one election’ strategy, the government recently endorsed the recommendations of a high-level committee for phased simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state Assemblies, and local bodies, following a nationwide consensus-building effort.
The first proposed constitutional amendment bill will establish provisions for conducting Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections concurrently.
According to sources referencing the committee’s recommendations, the bill aims to amend Article 82A by adding sub-clause (1) regarding the ‘appointed date’ and sub-clause (2) pertaining to the simultaneous end of terms for the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
