Srinagar: Days after the attacks on mobile vendors in Sopore, militants on Monday attacked a cell phone tower in Srinagar with a hand grenade, injuring one person.

The injured has been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Ahanger – brother of the tower’s owner – and a resident of the Gadood Bagh area of Habakadal locality in Srinagar city.

A senior police officer has said “Gunmen lobbed a hand grenade at a cell phone tower, injuring one person”.

Today’s attack on telecom tower is the first incident in Srinagar after grenade attacks on mobile towers were reported from Sopore and Handwara areas of north Kashmir.

Last week, two civilians associated with cell phone business were killed in north Kashmir.

The attacks on mobile vendors disrupted the telecom services across north Kashmir.

‘Lashkar-e-Islam’ had claimed responsibility of Sopore attack and issued threats to service providers to wind up their operations in Kashmir.

Meanwhile all the five main Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) franchise operating in ten different districts of Kashmir today closed their outlets after the re-surfacing of threatening posters and ‘mysterious’ attacks on people associated with telecommunication sector.
