Shafaqna India: India’s improved ability to score field goals will be crucial as the defending champions aim to extend their winning streak against Malaysia in the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament on Wednesday.
Field-goal conversion was a significant concern for India during their bronze medal-winning campaign at the Paris Olympics last month. Out of the 15 goals scored, only three came from open play, prompting retired legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh to emphasize the need for improvement in this area.
After securing their second consecutive Olympic bronze, India appears more dynamic, seizing scoring opportunities with a solid defense. They began their title defense with a 3-0 win over hosts China and followed it with a 5-1 victory against Japan on Monday. Of the eight goals scored so far, seven have come from open play, with young drag-flicker Sanjay converting a penalty corner against Japan.
Young striker Sukhjeet Singh, a member of the Paris Olympics squad, has been impressive, netting three field goals, while Abhishek and Uttam Singh have added two each. Given their world ranking and current form, India are strong contenders to reclaim the title, which they have won four times previously.
India’s young forwards have delivered strong performances in the first two matches, leaving little work for star drag-flicker and captain Harmanpreet Singh. Meanwhile, last edition’s runners-up, Malaysia, are struggling near the bottom of the standings with one loss and a draw. Despite their strong start, India must remain cautious and not underestimate any opponent as they embark on a new Olympic cycle.
