Shafaqna India: Pakistan has urgently called for UN intervention to halt what it describes as genocide in Gaza, highlighting the dire situation where new Israeli military orders are expected to displace around 250,000 people from Khan Younis.
Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, emphasized the urgent need for international action, criticizing the failure of the international community to restore peace in Gaza.
According to a UN alert issued from headquarters, there is widespread chaos and panic in southern Gaza as residents prepare for displacement due to the Israeli military’s new evacuation orders in Khan Younis. The situation has led to families setting up makeshift shelters along the coastline after displacement camps inland became overcrowded following previous bombardments.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Akram questioned the international community’s response and criticized those hindering Security Council calls for a ceasefire while continuing to supply arms to Israel, despite calls from the International Court of Justice to cease such actions.
He also highlighted the OIC’s proposal for a UN-led force to protect Palestinians, urging the Security Council to consider this proposal urgently.
Ambassador Akram underscored the importance of preventing genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, noting that Gaza’s plight underscores the heightened risks faced by populations under foreign occupation.
Responsibility to Protect (R2P), a global commitment endorsed by all UN member states in 2005, was also invoked, emphasizing the need for international intervention when states fail to protect their citizens or are themselves perpetrators of atrocities.
