Shafaqna India: Punjab Vidhan Sabha has sent the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to the Punjab Governor for his approval.
All eyes are now on Punjab Raj Bhawan to see when Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria gives his nod to the Bill, for it to be enacted. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann confirmed that the Bill had been sent to the Governor for his final approval.
Mann had earlier said that since it was an amendment to the state Act, it did not require a presidential assent and would be approved by the Governor.
The Bill was passed unanimously by Punjab Vidhan Sabha on April 13. This Bill is an amendment to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth sahib Satkar Act, 2008, and had included a provision for punishment of offences related to sacrilege and conspiracy for sacrilege against Guru Granth Sahib, for 10 years to life imprisonment.
The Bill was passed in the absence of lone loyal SAD member Ganeive Kaur Majithia , while the two rebel members — Manpreet Singh Ayali and Dr Sukhwinder Sukhi had supported the Bill.
