“Records haunt me,” says Ronaldo as he reaches an unprecedented 900-goal milestone

Shafaqna India: Cristiano Ronaldo has reached an unprecedented milestone, scoring his 900th career goal for club and country — a feat never before accomplished in football. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner netted Portugal’s second goal in their 2-1 victory over Croatia during a UEFA Nations League group match.

Reflecting on his remarkable achievement, Ronaldo remarked that he doesn’t actively seek to break records; instead, they “haunt him.” He added, “900 goals might seem like just another milestone, but only I know the hard work required every day to reach it. It’s a unique moment in my career. I don’t chase records; they come after me!”

Ronaldo’s goal was decisive, securing a win for Portugal in their opening match of the Nations League Group A campaign. This was his 131st goal for the national team since their triumph at the 2016 Euros.

After scoring from just outside the six-yard box, Ronaldo celebrated emotionally, dropping to his knees, overwhelmed by reaching this historic milestone on home soil.

Though the end of Ronaldo’s international career remains uncertain — with the 39-year-old recently saying it will be a “spontaneous decision” — he stated that his motivation now comes not from winning more trophies but from enjoying the game. “Winning the Euros for Portugal is like winning a World Cup. I’ve already won two trophies with Portugal that I deeply desired. My motivation isn’t about that anymore; it’s about enjoying football, and the records come naturally,” he said.

Over his illustrious career spanning more than two decades, Ronaldo has established himself as one of football’s greatest goal-scorers. His time at Sporting Lisbon (5 goals), Manchester United (145), Real Madrid (450), Juventus (101), and Al-Nassr (68) has seen him set numerous records.

Following this historic achievement, Real Madrid, where Ronaldo earned the nickname “Mr. Champions League,” congratulated their all-time top scorer. “Another historic milestone: 900 goals in the professional career of one of Real Madrid’s and world football’s greatest legends. Congratulations, dear and admired @Cristiano! Real Madrid and its fans are always proud of you,” read the club’s message on social media.
