Srinagar: Authorities on Monday imposed restrictions on the movement of public and transport in six police stations areas of downtown Srinagar in an apparent attempt to foil separatist rally on martyrs’ day.
A government official on Sunday said “For maintaining law and order, peace and tranquility in the Srinagar city, restrictions will be imposed on the movement of public and transport in the jurisdiction of police stations Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal and Maharaj Gunj, Maisuma”.
He said that the decision was taken during the high level meeting between the civil administration and top officials of the Police.
Authorities have placed separatist leaders under house arrest to thwart a united rally called by Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik.
Meanwhile Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and former CM Omar Abdullah visited the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqashband Sahib locality in the old city area separately to offer ‘Fateha’ prayers and floral tributes. Congress state president GA Mir also paid floral tributes to martyrs at Martyrs’ Graveyard.
Every year July 13 is observed as Martyrs’ day in memory of 22 Kashmiris who were shot dead by Dogra troops outside Central jail in Srinagar on the day in 1931. Both separatist and mainstream leaders in Kashmir lay claim to the legacy of these martyrs.
