Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will not be part of SriLanka ODI series

Shafaqna India: India’s skipper Rohit Sharma and premier batter Virat Kohli are likely to be rested for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in August. Either Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul is expected to lead the team in their absence. Additionally, India pacer Jasprit Bumrah is also likely to be given a break from the series.

It is understood that these key players have requested a break from the BCCI due to the demanding schedule over the last three months, starting from the IPL. Rohit Sharma, who hasn’t taken a break in almost six months, has been playing continuously since the South Africa Test series, including the Afghanistan T20Is, the England Test series, the IPL, and the recently concluded T20 World Cup.

A BCCI source mentioned that both Rohit and Kohli are automatic choices in the ODI setup and the upcoming three 50-over games against England before the Champions Trophy are sufficient practice for them. They are expected to prioritize Test matches, with India scheduled to play 10 Tests between September and January.

The source added that managing the workload of these senior players is crucial, and they may choose to rest instead of participating in the week-long three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka. However, they are welcome to join if they wish.

In Rohit’s absence, Hardik Pandya is the most likely candidate for the captain’s role, although KL Rahul, who led the ODI squad in South Africa, is also a strong contender.
