New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh government has suspended senior IPS officer Amitabh Thakur on Monday days after he lodged a police complaint against Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for threatening him over telephone.

The suspension comes after Thakur released an audio tape purportedly containing the conversation between him and the SP leader.

According to a home department official Thakur has been suspended on charges of “indiscipline, violating service rules, dereliction of duty” and “adopting anti-government approach”.

Thakur had been “attached” with the police headquarters here and had been asked “not to leave” the state capital without prior permission, official said.

The official also said that Thakur had been charged with “attending” meetings of various organisations “without permission”, “misusing government machinery, inciting the people” and “creating obstacles in the way of government officials in discharging duty”.

Thakur had met Union Home Ministry officials in Delhi on Monday and sought a CBI probe into charges of rape against him and security for himself and his wife saying that he would challenge the decision in the court.
