Shafaqna India: What began as a routine morning at Piplodi Government School in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district turned into a devastating tragedy on Friday, when a section of the middle school building suddenly collapsed, killing seven children and injuring 27 others—some critically. Among the victims was a six-year-old, the youngest to lose their life in the incident.
The collapse occurred just minutes after morning prayers began. The affected portion of the building housed Classes 6 and 7, where students were gathered when the structure gave way, burying many under debris.
Ignored Warnings from Students
Disturbingly, multiple students had noticed warning signs shortly before the collapse and rushed to alert teachers. According to eyewitness accounts, the teachers were reportedly having breakfast and dismissed the children’s concerns.
“Pebbles were falling. When the students told the teachers, they scolded them and continued eating,” a student told India Today TV. Another eighth-grade student recounted, “If the children had been taken out, the accident could have been avoided.”
Despite the visible structural issues, the students were reportedly instructed to return to their classrooms. Moments later, the roof collapsed, trapping dozens of children. Locals and frantic parents rushed to the scene and helped pull students from the rubble.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident. Officials from the education department and district administration have promised accountability and strict action if negligence is confirmed.
Political Reactions and Outrage
The tragedy has sparked a wave of criticism, with opposition leaders holding the ruling BJP government responsible for the state of government infrastructure. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called the incident “painful and shameful,” accusing the government of negligence despite earlier complaints about the school building’s condition.
Rahul Gandhi also condemned the collapse, stating that the incident reflects a deeper neglect of marginalized communities. “Most of these children belonged to the Bahujan Samaj — do their lives have no value for the BJP government?” he asked in a post on X.
He demanded an impartial probe and the strictest punishment for those responsible.
As the investigation unfolds, families of the victims and the community continue to grapple with the weight of a tragedy that many believe could—and should—have been prevented.
