The family of London Bridge killer Usman Khan have said they are “saddened and shocked” and “totally condemn his actions.”

They also expressed their condolences to the two victims who died and those who were injured in the violence on Friday.

The family of Khan said in a short statement issued through the Metropolitan Police on Tuesday: “We are saddened and shocked by what Usman has done. We totally condemn his actions and we wish to express our condolences to the families of the victims that have died and wish a speedy recovery to all of the injured. We would like to request privacy for our family at this difficult time.”

Cambridge University graduates Jack Merritt, 25, and Saskia Jones, 23, were stabbed to death by Khan during a prisoner rehabilitation event they were supporting at London’s Fishmongers’ Hall.

Khan, who was living in Stafford, was given permission to travel into the heart of London by police and the probation service.

The Metropolitan Police say they have found nothing to suggest that there were any other people involved in the attack, and their investigative priority remains to ensure that there is no outstanding threat to the public.

The attack itself began shortly before 2pm on Friday inside Fishmongers’ Hall. The attacker was attending the venue for a “Learning Together” event being held there and stabbed a number of people before being confronted by others inside the building.

The attacker then left the building onto London Bridge, as he was pursued and then detained by members of the public, as well as a British Transport Police officer who was in plain clothes.

Armed officers from both the City of London and Metropolitan Police arrived, confronted the attacker and shot him. A hoax explosive device worn by the attacker was recovered from him.

A man, who was one of the three other people injured during the attack, was released from hospital on Sunday and has been able to return home. Two women remain in a stable condition and continue to receive expert care in hospital.
